The 1988 (IGRA) Indian Gaming Regulatory Act became law after a precedent setting decision by The U.S. Supreme Court just the year before. Since that instance, twenty three of the 39 Native bands of Oklahoma have introduced gambling halls. The Chickasaw were the 1st Oklahoma Native tribes to take advantage of the wagering laws, and today control ten gambling halls of their own. Bingo is the game on which the above-mentioned gambling dens were founded. Electronic games like slot machines were not approved, because they are thought to lead to gambling addiction at a higher rate than bingo.
In the past few years, Oklahoma rules have altered to allow for big American Indian gaming gambling halls. You will now find Indian gambling dens with slots, video poker and vingt-et-un tables.
